TASMANIAN TIMBER INDUSTRY

Tasmania is the most forested state of Australia. The timber industry has been a major employer for over 150 years.

Forestry Tasmania, a government business, has the job of overseeing logging in over 1.5 million hectares of state forest. The foundation stone of forest activities is the forest practices code. This is a code of practice to ensure logging is not affecting biodiversity and geographical features.

All coupes to be harvested are assessed to ensure rare plant and animal species are not endangered, cave systems are not interfered with, and water courses will not be interfered with or polluted by silt.

Significant tall trees and environs are excluded from logging, and eagle nesting sites are totally protected.

Logging in Tasmania is based on the clearcut principal, with the exception of high altitude forests which are selectively logged for sawlog. Overall, no more than one percent of state forest is logged each year. This is replanted with species existing prior to harvest.

Huon Pine is sourced as salvage from trees felled over 100 years ago. Stumps and headlogs supplement a stockpile built up thirty years ago from a dam salvage operation. Live trees are no longer felled.

King Billy Pine, sourced for tonewoods, is only permitted to be milled from standing dead or down trees. Special species management zones have been set aside for long rotation selective logging of rainforest species for the craft and furniture industries.

Forestry Tasmania has received international environmental certification to ISO 14 001 for its environmental management system. This certification has formalized their commitment to sustainable forest management practices.

Gondwana Forest Products works within the constraints of Forestry Tasmania, and sources its resource primarily from salvage in logged areas, or as boards cut from sawlogs.
