The process of working wood causes fine particles of wood dust to be given off. Some of this dust can be so fine it can
penetrate the alveoli in the lungs.
Depending on an individuals susceptibility, these dusts may cause mild skin irritation, or dermatitis, to more severe allergic or systemic reactions. Asthmatic reactions are particularly associated with exposure to wood dusts in some people. It is very important that efforts are made to minimise exposure to these dust particles. This will include having good ventilation, efficient dust extractor equipment, or personal respirator helmets. At the least, a dust mask should always be worn.
