SAFETY

The process of working wood causes fine particles of wood dust to be given off. Some of this dust can be so fine it can penetrate the alveoli in the lungs.

This dust may be toxic or in some cases carcinogenic.

Depending on an individuals susceptibility, these dusts may cause mild skin irritation, or dermatitis, to more severe allergic or systemic reactions.

Asthmatic reactions are particularly associated with exposure to wood dusts in some people.

It is very important that efforts are made to minimise exposure to these dust particles. This will include having good ventilation, efficient dust extractor equipment, or personal respirator helmets.

At the least, a dust mask should always be worn.

Australian woods to be particularly careful with include:
  • Blackbean (strongly irritating)
  • Blackwood (a known sensitising wood)
  • Camphor Laurel
  • Coolibah
  • Grass tree(poisonous)
  • Jarrah
  • Silky Oak

This list is not exhaustive, and it is recommended that basic safety precautions be taken with all Australian woods.
